“Dance music you don’t dance to” can be qualified as my favorite type of music. Though I’d stray from horrible monikers such as IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) and the like, in essence, this is what gets me thinking indeed. Now Matthew Dear hands us Black City.
From the founder of Ghostly International himself and the man behind uber-sexual downright naughty tech house project Audion, Black City embodies all that we love about the label in the first place. The mood here is darker and creepier than 2007’s Asa Breed, with an atmosphere of seediness and things that happen only after dark.
Dear’s voice captures every bit of yearning emotion, and the tempos fall way below anything that would ever incite dancing. Even the faster songs, such as “Little People (Black City)” keep your ass in a chair, hypnotized, and where the melodies step up to a bit more lighter tone, that sunshine is still scattered by a thick haze.
