sketch by lauren dickens, austin tx Listen here, we need you to know about Shmu. When Shmu, or Sam Chown as his gentile friends may know him, isn’t ripping cerebellums out of people’s brains or exhuming repressed nightmares with the experimental noise/rock band Zorch, he’s busy crafting harmonies that inspire everything from baby-making to sun-tanning. Fit for no particular activity, this is simply music you live to. You can find in every corner of each song a different vibe or emotion. The breadth of its composition is startling and sheds a pigeon-hole description. The harmonies of Shmu’s ooo’s and ahhh’s hit me directly in my weak spot. And without gushing, the album as a whole is a lesson in the mastery of song. This song’s xylophonic chimes remind me of some sitcom from the 1960s. The singing is playful, and this bass line is my favorite on the album. I also love the funky bass in this one. The snyth sparkles kick off a perfect sun-saturated time. Shmu’s signature precise drumming hops in and out of some crystal clear swimming hole. “Heads Will Fall” steers the record in a new direction about 2/3 the way through. Shmu splices and dices, and the choppy waves remind me of my favorite The Field. This track prepares me for warm weather in so many ways. As aforementioned, the whole composition is amazing. Shmu has an impeccable ability to make guitars and harmony, components we’re all so familiar with, seem fresh. Instantly charming! Well, that’s it. I wish I could post the whole album. To pick 4 out of 18 songs seems so wrong! If you’ve enjoyed and would like to know more, come on out and see Shmu along with Zac at the Massive Beacon party this weekend. Man, who else is ready for summer? RS Radio: Episode 2February 9th, 2010

sketch by lauren dickens, austin tx OH! Hello. Long time. I don’t know about you guys, but my 2010 has been BONKERS thus far. But I can never stay away for too long, especially when I have some new treats for y’all. Music is our wife, but Rhythm Sektion keeps a mistress called, uh…well…called art. Austin is bustling with so many talented designers, painters, sculptors, and photographers. We feel it a great disservice to keep the things we love from the people we love. And so it’s with great pleasure that I post our first artist spotlight, Lauren Dickens. Every post I do over the next month or so will have a sketch from Lauren. I like them a bunch. They’re simple, void of a potential mess of ideas and emotions, just direct and pretty. I asked Lauren about her about her creations, and the response was inspiring:
Get it girl. If you’re interested in learning more about Lauren you can click here, and change your life forever by shooting her an e-mail. And, to save face, here is a funky fresh Mark E track off a new CD I purchased from Turntable Lab in New York. It’s pretty long, but sit down for ten minutes and think about what it would be like if you ever lost YOUR hands: stepping up and steppin outFebruary 1st, 2010Its like a new website-kinda. It’s getting there. I hope it doesn’t freak you out! We are busy-er than ever trying to make rhythmsektion better for you, and your friend, and her friend too. During the next month, the blog will likely be changing some more, as we relaunch the website to better service you. After the launch party in February, we will be looking to booking shows, and throwing parties because we love that shit. okay, so enough hoo-hahhh about that. some music, yes? The EP for the new The Dark Esquire song “Situation” i think comes out this month, or came out. Not sure, but this CFCF remix is not included. Talk about spacey. Not kevin spacey, spacey in a good way, zone out on a winter day. The 7″ edit is much more up tempo and sounds like a gang of four song, so if thats something you think would make you horny, then you should check it out. 12” here… digital ep here!
More… The new Four Tet album, There Is Love in You, is exactly what you wanted it to be. Loops building loops which are floating on loops, then divided by more loops, an subtracted from… loops. Its equal parts impressive and beautiful. This is by far the albums longest song, at over 9 minutes, but it gives you an excellent sense for what Four Tet is doing on this record. You must go get it if you are any sort of electronic music fan. This just seems to be on heavy play by all of us lately. Perhaps, it’s dreams of beaches and Barton Springs on a hot summer day. Either way, pretty good remix by Memory Tapes, of a seemingly decent Tanlines track. Can’t really tell, but its a fun one. |
